Fantasy football

Rich takes top spot with his goal and man of the match for generally making the opposition look foolish, but will his busted knee lose him playing points? Little change elsewhere as it's a point each. Just to liven it up a bit if there is a draw at the top of the table at the end of the season the winner will be worked out on points per match. Ben is currently leading on this.

A good week for our midfield dynamo as Rich also goes top of the Yellow Boot table.

Well played all, that wasn't the normal Angel side by any stretch of the imagination. Everyone played well, covered for each other when needed and wanted the ball. There was also plenty of talking and encouragement. Play like that and we've still got a chance of catching them there Black Sox. Fantasy football below and the race for Yellow Boot, I thought I'd include this as we've actually scored some goals now.

James stays on the pitch again and with his two assists grabs the top spot. Clean sheet points for the defenders keep us second and third. Dave G draws level with Rich with his goal and Ben's second man of the match and goal fire him up the table as does Al's clean sheet.

So that's a goal for all the outfield players except Chris (I don't count as I go in goal sometimes)

Xmas Jumpers

It appears to have fallen to me to try and organise the xmas jumpers night this year. Frankly i'm struggling for dates. Anyone got a preference??

I cant do the 16-17th weekend which would seem the natural choice, but feel free to do it without me.

Could do the 10th or is that too soon? 23rd seems too near to xmas, people might be buggering off to see family and stuff like that.

If we can agree on a night i'll set up an event on here and try and find somewhere to eat prior to boozing.

Bill's got a new jumper as has big Al i believe so we shoudl really do something.

Good news is we won, again! bad news is so did the Black Sox 2 - 1. I do believe that means we have to win both our final games and they have to lose both theirs. With a goal difference to us of around 7 goals. So, all is not quite lost but very nearly. We could have done some good towards that goal difference tonight mind you. Yellow brick wall broken...

The club was reeling last night with the news that club stalwart Dave Brinham has broken a bone in his foot and will be in plaster for between 4 and 6 weeks. Hot on the heels of Alan's shock withdrawal last week the club is in a state of shock.

Brinham was playing in a unauthorised four-a-side friendly behind closed doors when the injury occurred and now looks to have played his last game of 2011.

Quizzed this morning Dave was reported to be "Gutted" but had been seen to be in good spirits while flirting with a nurse.

Asked whether his injury would put in jeopardy a planned booze-addled trip to Brighton this weekend Dave was quoted as saying "No, still going".

NVA Sunday ref 'Tom' was said to be looking forward to a bit of peace and quiet on a sunday night.

Not the best start but certainly not the worst

Gutted.

3 points off the Jeff pace already. Not so gutted about the performance though, two good goals and only the two unfortunate own goals that made the difference, just need to sort it out at the back a little.As this is the first game of the season how about some feedback from you lot. Say it like it is, if people need to do something different lets tell them.

My two pennys worth:
All in all not a bad performance, just need a bit more organisation which I suppose is down to the manager.
Paul, stopped scoring at our end
Dave, stand off a bit instead of running out of defence when they're coming at us, stay goal side.

Chris needs to decide/know where he's playing, in the middle and getting up there in my opinion. I found myself further up than him when I was in defence, although this may well be my bad.

All of us, except Dave who generally makes himself available, Give Al, and Dave when he receives from Al, more options out of goal, I think I am especially bad at running off up the other end instead of using the middle of the park.

Maybe we all need to try to go passed someone a bit more, when it is safe to do so of course.So there you go, my opinions based on nearly two whole years playing the game.

We nearly beat the army. But we didn't.

I've left it a bit long to write this update and therefore can't really remember what happened. I do know that we were 2 - 1 up with around five minutes when our manager made a fatal error; Letting Chris H leave the field of play. For a couple of minutes we went to pieces at the back and that was long enough for them to score two goals, leaving a 3 - 2 loss. Maybe if Al had been available to be between the sticks he may have saved one, but it was not to be. Alas. It was a great game though, played as the game should be but without the whinging, niggling, kicking and complaining that sometimes occurs. They may have been the army but they were a good group of lads, fair play to 'em although lets hope they are less friendly when the hun come romping over the hill.

Unfortunately the Black Sox also managed to win leaving us bottom of the pile and ownership of the Jeff Cup in jeopardy, although we do have two games in hand, both against the Sox so it will all depend on those. Unless we're all over them, Chris you're doing the full ninety.

Oh, and the army had a player in grey who could kick it really, really hard. Just thought you should know.

Oh man of the match wise, er, we were winning when Chris was on the field and lost when he wasn't, so he can have it.

NVA Sunday - an update is deserved

I don't usually mention NVA Sunday (Beverley Tigers) on here but last night we were on fire.
An excellent all round display lead to a 4 - 1 victory for us with two goals for myself, one for Simon and one for Chris. Chris' was mostly a solo effort, cutting through them to open the scoring for us. Simon's was a beautifully worked goal running on to a through ball from Chris and mine were right place, right time, smashes. Al looked virtually unbeatable between the sticks and Dave, doing most of the defending, was solid and assured giving the rest of us licence to go forward knowing he was mopping up everything at the back. Rich put in the legwork, doing a lot of the midfield hassling giving them no time on the ball and worked several chances as well putting in some vital tackles in the midfield.
Basically we were great, well played all. Rather enjoyed winding up the youngsters too.

Seven of us strolled up to Bishop Burton that night, weakened in the middle by the loss of Ben who unfortunately had been forced to miss the match for a thoroughly rubbish reason. Rob was back with us so we were a little stronger up top. If the NVA was a woman we had basically gone from Pamela Anderson to Carol Vorderman. However with Chris and Dave B at the back as usual we still had the legs of Tessa Sanderson.
As is usually the case from kickoff they kept the ball for some time but were not going anywhere and eventually fired wide from long range. I have been studying why they seem to keep the ball at the start for so long, using eye witness accounts as well as the latest video technology and have decided that it is due to me generally starting on the bench, I did put together a ten page document explaining why this is the case but unfortunately I left it on the bus and the dog ate it.

Not long later they had another attack with their four foot two striker bombing down our left wing. He attempted to go passed Chris on the outside but was stopped in his tracks with what we all thought was a perfectly timed tackle. Although what we saw as a perfectly timed tackle may not be an exact interpretation of the rules and their little terrier didn’t seem to like it, although to be fair he didn't like anything.
The match was looking pretty even, and quite a good spectacle for the fans, end to end stuff with some nice tackles going in however the highlight of the game was when the mighty NVA broke the deadlock. It all happened in a flash and Chris had a better view, and has a better memory, than I so I asked him to describe it:

‘Well held up by Gadie, drew in a couple of defenders then dinked it in to Rob, took it down and wallop’

Sounds pretty accurate to me.

After the wonder goal the game continued in a similar vein, with neither team making any clear cut chances and This was generally story in the second half as well, but towards the end our lack of fitness began to show and it was this more than a lack of ability that lead to their two goals. I was dead on my ass for the last five minutes and seemed to just arrive at one end of the pitch in time for everyone there to be ushering me back down the other. Guys, if you’re needing to tell me ‘get up there, Will. Get back Will’ the reason I’m not already doing it is that I’m entirely knackered.

It didn’t feel like we deserved to lose this game, a draw felt like a fairer result but we played ok until the fatigue set in and I also took it as a compliment that the opposition needed to spend so much time fouling us when we were attacking; it’s going to take a few washes to get the handprints off the back of Rob’s shirt.

As to the man of the match, this is a tough one. No one really stood out. Rob did his job and scored a goal, Gadie, Rich and I covered a lot of ground in the midfield, Chris and Dave were pretty solid at the back and Al made some good saves with some excellent distribution. So this week, the whole team get it. Not neccassarily for being great, just for being as good as each other. Cop out? Yup.

Possible injury despair for the NVA...

NVA's Founder, Captain, financier, bookkeeper, Manager and midfield dynamo is being rushed into hospital at 2.20 this afternoon for an x-ray on the ankle he damaged when blasting the winning goal in his previous NVA outing. The results of the scan will tell whether the injury is career threatening and players, fans and backroom staff are all on tenterhooks awaiting the results as it could effect not only NVA's further success in the league but also the overall survival of the club.
When questioned on the subject the captain replied 'Yeah, it kinda hurts. I'm really hoping it won't stop me from being able to reach the cider bus at the festival this weekend.'

On another day...

Things didn’t look too promising in the build up to this game. A text from Ben in the morning claiming his unexplained unavailability was not a good start, I could only assume that Jesus man had convinced him that those that play football all go to hell, especially those that play in Satan’s yellow. I was unlikely to play due to a dodgy ankle, possibly still in shock from scoring the week before and Simon was unfortunately unavailable as he had something better to do. Mr East stepped up to fill the void, as he always does when required and so we at least had six. The opposition have been looking pretty handy in previous weeks, so we took the bus with us.
On arriving at the pitch I saw Ben sitting on the floor in his kit putting his boots on, it appears that Jesus man had not only repented but had even healed Ben’s dodgy toe for him to boot, excuse the pun, so we not only had a team but also had a sub. Nice.
Warm up was also not too promising, we seemed to be more intent on injuring each other than anything else, culminating in Mr Brinham getting hit square in, well, the Brinhams. Unfortunately he was jumping at the time so the legs were a kimbo; He was not a happy bunny for a while, but recovered in time to take his place in the yellow wall.
Our Rob usually leaves it late to show up for matches, but as the whistle blew he still had not arrived so Mr Gadie took his place up top.
They kicked off, passed it around for a bit without really getting anywhere then took a speculative shot. Unfortunately the shot went in, making us one nil down without having touched the ball. Our heads could have gone down there and then, still no sign of Rob and losing already, but they didn’t. We kicked off and got stuck in, Mr East especially, played some nice football and matched them for large periods of the first half much to their surprise and indeed to ours. We didn’t pose much threat on their goal, although Dave did flick on a long ball from Al nicely but couldn’t quite chase it down.
Second half we were under the cosh a bit more, things were getting a bit niggly and this was being spurned on by Easty’s less meaty tackles in the midfield. They had the ball mostly but were still not looking like scoring and we occasionally looked like we could get something on the break. There second goal was unfortunately, Al saved well onto the post but the ball dribbled back behind him and the spin on it took it off his body and dribbling over the line. The rest of the game continued in a similar vein and at the final whistle the score remained 2 nil. Both goals were a little soft and we could, on another day easily have come away with a point, especially as Rob had not arrived so we had played the game with no subs available.
Man of the match is a difficult choice this week, there was no stand out player as everyone did their job. But If I had to choose one, which I do, I would probably go for Mr Brinham; solid at the back with some nice attacking passes, all this done with his testicles resting in his shoes.

Oh, and for those that were wondering no, Rob didn’t show up. Naughty Rob, no biscuit.

Captain fantastic

You know what? We won! And, you know what, I scored! Yup me, scored, on a Wednesday. Only six seasons in and I get my first competitive goal. I've got as many as the NVA legend Chris Garner now, the pressure will be on for more, the fans will be baying for it. Shame they're likely to be disappointed.

Only seven of us approached the field tonight, meaning only the single sub. To be honest this was deliberate; any more than that and the whole subbing thing goes tits up. Simon started on the bench as he can run all night wheras I for one sure need a breather in the middle.

The description of the game can be basically simplified to this; Fergie kicked off and spent the next 24 minutes whenever they didn't have the ball asking for fouls. I'm pretty sure that if I had gone up to one of them, politely tapped them on the shoulder and asked for the ball they would have shouted for a foul. Ok, there was some football involved too, they probably had the better of the possession but we probably had the better of the chances. Al certainly had the better of the swearing.

The main difference between the teams was the glorious goal we scored. Mr Gadie slotted the ball through to me and I deftly punted it far to far ahead of me, ran after it realising I was considerably slower than I thought I was, and just about managed to scuff it towards the goal. I don't really know what happened after that as I fell over in a heap, all I know is that the ball had somehow made its way into the back of the net. The NVA celebrations were pretty toned down, suggesting to me that it wasn't the greatest of goals, but a goal's a goal. Especially if you've not got one before. This goal was important for another reason too; tactics. Basically it appears that if I have a shot just as Brinham has subbed himself off, it'll go in. Three times this has happened, it can't be coincidence.
So, ball in the back of the net, three points in the bag, discovery of the ultimate tactic and my ankle on ice. Not a bad result for a wednesday. Think I'll have a cider.

As to the man of the match award: ‘Go on, you can have it,’ said Chris. I didn’t argue.

Must do better

Our side was awesome this week. Rob was back, Suarez had joined the ranks and we had two subs. Nothing could go wrong surely, this had to be our first three points. On the other hand Angel were flying high with two victories under their belt already, this was unlikely to be an easy contest. Although there was other important point; Our midfield talisman, engine of the team and inspriation to all who play with him, me, was unavailable due to being a bit ill. Could the NVA pull together without him?

At first it seemed not. We were extremely disorganised, with new players/players that had been out for some time having trouble geling, also our manager has very little idea what he's doing and had also positioned himself on the other side of the pitch from the subs; making the making of changes impossible. Also, disappointingly the team did not help him in that regard and voluntary substitutions were not forthcoming. Naughty NVA.

Neither team looked overly likely to score, the game was pretty much end to end but mainly through long balls not any intricate midfield passing and so both defences were able to cut out any attacks.

Half time came, we had a team talk about what was going wrong and then continued exactly as we had first half, considering the striking power we had on pitch the lack of incision was amazing.

Around half way through the second half three of our players decided to, instead of playing football, show the crowd a syncronised ballet move. All three players approached a loose ball looking to clear it before simultaneously spinning gracefully past the ball. Alex, of previous Notvery years, would have been proud. Unfortunately this allowing two Angel players through on goal, leaving Al with no chance and making the score 1 - nil.

This seemed to finally jolt us into a bit of urgency and we started to make some more chances, around five minutes from the end we got our reward; Ben hit a long pass out of defence straight down the middle and Mike (Suarez) leathered it passed the keeper from the edge of the D. Not dreamy football but effective. Up till the final whistle we seemed more likely to score but when it blew at 1 - 1 most people would have agreed that to be a fair result.

We should have been better, and hopefully we will be as the team gels. Two subs has never really worked for us, causing too much confusion and along with then new/returning players we just couldn't get organised. Nine points off the pace means that we need wins all the way now to make anything of this season. If nothing else we've got the Jeff cup to keep hold of.

Each week that I bother to do a writeup Chris and I shall attempt to pick our player of the match. This week was a pretty close call so congratulations to Ben for being slighty better than the rest of us.

For the fallen

If we stayed very quiet we could hear them. The rumble of studs on the ground and the rattle of the fence as the ball struck it again and again. But we were not worried, we were not flustered, we were strong. We knew what we had to do. HAD to do. In the absence of fallen comrades (ok some probably fallen in the pub somewhere through excessive alcohol consumption, but fallen none the less), and for the protection of all things holy the Yellow Brick Wall must stand.

As we approached the field, our mere six against their multitude, there was virtually silence. Each man running through his internal mantra to prepare for the match:

Chris - Just like the good old days, just like the good old days, just like the good old days

Al - 'Shoot, Shoot, Shoot, Shoot, Shoot!

Ben - Maybe we should move the frozen peas nearer the doorway?

Me - Run about enough and they won't notice you're not actually doing much of any use

Simon - who are these people?

Dave G - In the jungle the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight

Then the whistle broke the silence.

They attacked, We defended. They attacked, we defended. They attacked, we defended. Wave after wave bult up slowly before crashing on the wall, only to be dissipated with disdain. It became obvious that although they had much of the possession we could happily carry on like this for months without conceding. But they had no plan B, and indeed no one that could shoot straight and so it went on.

It also became obvious that they were only leaving one defender with Dave G at the back. Each of Al's high long balls was dealt with uncomfortably by their lone defender and it wouldn't be long before he made a mistake. Early in the second half this happened. The defender missed his header Dave ran through and slotted home. They had been attacking for over 20 minutes, with no real chances created. We had attacked once and scored. This did not make the army very happy, much to our enjoyment.

Unfortunately, around 2 minutes from the end, their defender wandered up to our end received a pass and leathered the ball at around Mack 6 into the back of our net. Al could do nothing, it was lucky for us they hadn't thought of doing that a little earlier.

At the final whistle it was strange emotions for us; we'd have bitten your hand off for a point at the start, but having been ahead it almost felt like two points lost as opposed to one gained. Generally though, we were pleased. Not only with the result but with how we had played; Excellent tactics, communication and organisation. NVA & Meerkats in Bore Draw...zzzzz....zzzzz...

Jays Report on last weeks action, pretty accurate really so can't be arsed to write any more...

I searched Google images for "Football Sleep" and this image came up, so i thought i'd pop it in.

Meerkats are the Champions...

The evening started on a knife edge, with the Meerkats needing only a single point to claim victory. They even had the goal difference to suffer a loss and theoretically still win the league, with a 6 goal cushion over second place 110.

NVA v Meerkats.

Both teams started well in this vital fixture, with the Meerkats looking to seal the Championship and NVA looking to finish a glorious season in style with a big scalp. The passing was crisp and the energy rate was strong from both sides. There were a few half chances at either end, but nothing the caused too much concern. the nearest effort came from the thumping boot of Johnny Hardcastle, who unleashed a fierce drive from mid way into the NVA half. Unfortunately he was narrowly wide of the target and Big Al in goals never looked to worried.

Meanwhile...

ONE10 v Angel
Angel had the misfortune of facing a 110 team that gave their best ever performance and one that if they repeat in the top division next season will have a few of the top teams worried. Angel didn’t play badly, but found themselves blown away as 110 won 6 v 0. 110 based their game on a solid base in defence and midfield along with the silky skills of Mosquito and the goal threat of the division’s top scorer McLachlan up front. Time and again 110 ripped through Angel with short sharp passing and intelligent movement with McLachlan firing in a fantastic four goals , Mosquito hit one and Downing adding another with a powerful drive. Chances were few and far between for Angel, with Marcel wasting the few half chances that came Angel’s way. Magnificent victory for the army lads.
Back on pitch 1...
The second half started with Meerkats playing more reserved football, which grew as the half went on, to the point over borrowing the Athletico bus at times. At the back, Des was controling the pace of the game for the Kats, whilst the frustrated NVA players found it difficult to get hold of the ball. On the odd busrt forward, the Kats wasted possession around the half way mark, but worked tirelessly to win the ball back. The three back players for NVA (Hebblethwaite, Brinham and Harley all played their part in stiffling the Meerkats when the did break. In the end the Kats saw out the clock and apologised to their opposition for being so boring, but it was job done and Championship won!

Mauled v Athletico

Unfortunately this game was so short of life that referee Jacko has refused to write a report, stating that the only incidents he could report on were the two kick-offs!

Also worth noting that Dave Brinham was absolutely phenomenal in our final game and was player of the season by a mile... he has been bitchin that he never gets a mention in the write ups (probably because I always overshadow him, and Bill normally writes them and clearly doesn't rate him) so I thought i'd give him a little shout. Jay has acknowledged your prowess this week anyway Dave, so i don't know why I bothered really.

All in all, our best ever season, tinged with a little regret that we did not really push for promotion. If we could just get shot of them pesky Army teams with their tanks and their bombs ...and their bombs and their guns...

Meerkats only 1pt away!

Meerkats v Mauled FC

Mauled kicked off the game but lost the ball fairly quickly to Meerkats who held the ball well and showed good passing skill. Meerkats pushed foward and put in a beautiful cross which landed just went inside the box. Mauled player Ryan Martin aka 'hotdog' strechted his leg into the box to get the ball; penalty!!! Hardcastle stepped up and slotted it in the bottom right corner. Shortly before half time Hardcastle ran with the ball and showed tremendous speed to dribble and score 2-0 !. Towards the end of the game Mauled began to lack fitness and left the defence open for Hardcastle to get his hatrick ! Playforth managed to bag a last second goal for Meerkats to complete the route! Mauled FC really got 'Mauled' in this game!

NVA v 110

NVA and 110 contested an entertaining encounter which 110 deservedly edged to win 2 v 1. 110 had most of the possession and chances in the game as NVA reverted back to the long ball game which this writer thought they had left in past. It was left to Kennington up front for NVA to lead a lone attack for long spells against at least two 110 defenders. The possession paid off for 110 as they went into a two goal lead with two good strikes by McLachlan. NVA were given a lifeline late on as Kennington stroked home a free kick from the edge of the area after an illegal back pass by the 110 defender. 110 seemed confused by this decision and really should have all their players aware of the rules before they play. Despite the late scare, 110 eased through the last few minutes and came out the victors.

Athletico v Angel

In an entertaining match it was Angel who took the spoils. Both teams were determined from the start that attack was the order of the day. This made for some great open football, with both teams creating a number of chances. Man of the Match Zirkol was the driving force for Angel, with neat passing and driving runs towards goal, but it was Marcel Veli who proved the difference, nipping in on a quality through ball to fire the ball home from a tight angle.

Damaged ankles, damaged pride.

Firstly I would like to apolgise to Al for my failure to return his England top. Hannah washed it and folded it up nicely, but I failed to bring it along. I am truly sorry.

Secondly I would like to spell apologise correctly.

The biggest game of the season and this is what I get:

We have seven full time squad members and I get big girlie excuses from 4 of them. Injury crisis methinks.

Fortunately I later on heard this:

Crisis somewhat averted.

With Chris H injured (Calf), Dave B otherwise engaged (seminar), Dave G a bit injured (torn glove) and Starky unavailable (er, unavailable) things were looking rather dicey for a game that could, if we won it, guarantee us second place (The highest place we could get without getting promoted and therefore getting gupped for the whole of next season). However Burnley Chris, a nine feet tall man mountain and Ant man Nick, a nine feet wide man mountain (in a good way, so the ladies tell me) stepped up to the plate to help us out. Burnley Chris has actually offered his services full time, an offer which I have gratefully received. Also the Gadie glove disaster was averted by sticking him in goal, where he got some nice big gloves, and giving Al a run outfield.

The match started well, as is usually the case. They had more of the ball but our defending was solid, as was Gadie in goal and there was not much threat to the scoreline. At the other end we were also creating some chance, with the opposition leaving some big gaps, especially down the left flank. Chris and Nick settled in well Chris' legs intercepting the ball from at least 2 metres away and Nick putting in some excellent tackles and letting the opposition know he was there. Ben received the ball on the edge of their box but it simply would not sit for him and his shot went wide.
As the game continued we began to slow, this was evident whenever our keeper received the ball, nobody pushed out, meaning that when the ball was pumped upfield the majority of our players were still on the edge of our box fifty yards away from Rob, giving him little chance of holding onto it, although we were able to exploit the big gaps down their flanks from a few of the long kicks.

near the beginning of the second half 110 scored, changing the game as it meant that we had to commit more men, this lead to an almost instant second goal for them, leaving us a mountain to climb. ironically the opposition probably spend alot of time running up mountains, probably with tanks on their back. Our need to score and their considerably higher fitness levels began to show and a third goal came not long after, although it was a long range effort that Gadie was unable to pick up on as it came out of a sea of players.

Although pulling three goals back was unlikely we carried on working and some good play and pressure on their defence ended with them being forced into a direct backpass giving us a free kick on the edge of their box. Free kicks are usually of little use in this form of the game, however the opposition forgot to do anything about it so ,after a nod to the ref and a quick shrug of the shoulders, Rob simply leathered into the bottom right corner.

The game finished 3 - 1, which was a reasonably fair scoreline, they were more organised and as usual, more fit and it was this that made the difference in the end.

At some stage in the match I chased down a lost cause nearly nicking it off the defender, Nick had a chance on goal and Ben made a good run down the middle, However I can't remember when these things happened. Dave also made a couple of excellent saves, however the exact time that these occured eludes me also.

I woke up this morning with a rather painful ankle, so it would appear that dodgy ankles are contagious, I shall spend the next 3 days in an oxygen tent in an attempt to be ready to play for NVA sunday.

Thankyou to our ringers, without these two we wouldn't have been playing and welcome Burnley Chris to the NVA fold. You've started in probably our hardest match, it's all goals and glory from here. Possibly.

Different Bricks...

Although a few different bricks were in place the Yellow Brick Road remains intact...

Following the withdrawl of Bill due to having the sniffles, Dave Gadie with a dodgy ankle and with your author on the bench 'for emergency use only' the squad was pushed to it's limits. A slightly unconventional line up saw Dave G donning the gloves allowing big Al to play in the midfield, Ben dropped back to shore up the defence with Dave B, leaving Rob and the returning Starky to form a potent looking strike force.

Angel were shorn of a couple of regulars themselves and looked there for the taking, and this proved to be the case as after a slightly dodgy start as people adjusted to their new roles NVA took control.

With NVA shorn of Gaffer Collins' insitence on tactics, formations and ever changing systems, total football took over. Rob and Starky were all over the Angel defence but as their keeper decided to have one of 'those nights' the game remained scoreless until Ben started to step up from the back, a 'sighter' which missed the goal was followed up by a beautifully hit effort which found the back of the net.

We remained totally dominant for the remainder of the match with Angel only managing one vague attempt which Gadie dealt with comfortably. Brinham and Ben had danger man Marcel shackled leaving Angel toothless. Countless chances came and went our way, with the Angel keeper performing miracles even denying Al when the ball looked destined for the top corner. We shall hopefully save the goals for another day.

So another game another cleansheet, one more next week and we will have completed a full half season without conceding. Next week's game is likely to be a different affair with 110 our oppo, a bit of belief, another clean sheet and a couple of goals and we can see them army boys off.

Meerkats came out strong dominating the game but not really creating much as NVA defended brillantly. NVA didnt manage to keep the ball and didnt create too much. The best chance fell to NVA star Gadie who missed a one on one just outside the box. It ended 0-0!

Playing our way down Quality Street

Mr Stark received his NVA bobble hat as we introduced him to the supporters, up until now he has been a loan player but was signed fully in this window and proved himself to be another excellent transfer by the manager with a brace of goals.

After last week's poor result the decision to start with our first on the team sheet, first choice defender, on the bench would seem like a silly idea and for the first few minutes this appeared to be the case as we took a while to get organised, or indeed, to get the ball. Mauled had the better of the play at first and looked the more threatening going forward, however as NVA started to get into their stride the balance of power began to shift with the ball spending more time in the Mauled half. As half time loomed the score was still 0 - 0 until Rob chased and scored what looked very much like a lost cause, his success would have cost me my house if I had one and Chris had taken my bet.

The NVA work rate continued to be high into the second half, with 'man of the match' Ben Hebblethrwarrtte bossing the midfield, and it seemed that only the weather was going to keep the scoring down with the ball running away from us across the wet ground being pushed by a strong wind. Eventually though the continued NVA pressure resulted in two more goals, both for Mr Stark, giving a 3 - 0 victory it could have been more but Mr Stark didn't want to show off on his debut selflessly spurning not one but two glorious chances for his hat trick.

As always we gave the opportunity for Al to make some good saves, as we like to do, and he did so well. His kicking was a little 'off centre' but he was not aided by the strong wind whipping around the stadium.

With the Black Sox managing to get a point against 110 (Yes, you guessed it, 0 - 0) this win puts us back up into second place, the triple is still on!

To top off a successful night we also managed to pull off third place, and another box of Quality Street, at the Cornerhouse quiz. It was a tough one this week; we were a weakened side of only four players and as Miss Burnitt herself pointed out she's 'only a girl', but my superior knowledge of dolphin sex pulled us through.

The 'Untouchables' lose their touch

NVA's undefeated run was finally ended by a well organised and more importantly very fit opposition, two traits that you would hope to find in a team assembled from her majestys armed forces. To be honest if they had brought their tanks with them it wouldn't have made it much more of a one sided affair.

NVA held out for around ten minutes before the waves of troops finally broke through, every time we tackled one there was another following up and another and another. Panic appeared to set in in the second half with our pass completion rate to them considerably higher than our pass completion rate to ourselves. They could have scored more than three, with Al being the main man in preventing this with some excellent saves although I think we all should get some credit for his excellent glovework as it is us that allow the opposition to give him so much practice.
NVA's play was epitomized from a kickoff, as the ball was passed to our midfielder from the centre he was still wandering off the other way looking dejected like someone had stolen his teddy and only just managed to react in time to prevent them breaking straight through.
As for highlights of NVA's play It is hard to find any, I did a sliding tackle that I was rather proud of and left me with a nice wound and also, after I had been subbed onto the sidelines, one of the opposition players accused me of 'looking like a player'. That's something I've not been accused of before.
Fitness was again the key in this one, not something we can do a whole lot about. Playing against teams of a similar fitness to us I would rate our chances but such a big difference means it seems like we are playing against 10 men. 10 fit men. With guns.
We Can only thank the heavens that team NVA managed to pick up a medal in the quiz.

P.S. if you see Chris Harley in the near future, do ask him how his fantasy football is going, he does like it so. Oh and while you're at it remind him of his 'at least you'll be sure to beat Bill' quip at the start of the season. Champions league, yer having a laugh...

P.P.S I apologise for threatening to strangle Miss Hannah Burnitt, and all the other people in her car, on Facebook last night. This threat was a genuine typing error and if she tells anyone anything different I'll fooking kill her.

NVA v Angel:

NVA started off the game with a lovely pass from kennington to put Gadie through but he couldn't get the shot on target. Angel looked good up front with the likes of Marcel and Angle creating many chances. NVA managed to break away with Kennington who did a great dummy to take it past one defender and place it into the goal ! The sides came back out and Angel kicked off. Marcel the super striker ran straight towards goal with the NVA players stood admiring his drive towards goal, he hit one which rocketed back out and he smashed the rebound into lefthand corner ! 1-1 ! It was all to play for now ! NVA managed to find there feet again and settled play down. Kennington yet again showed great skill just outside the box and he managed to score again 2-1! The 3rd goal for NVA came shortly after when Gadie pressured the Angel defence and stole the ball and slotted it away 3-1 !

110 v Mauled FC

110 extended Mauled’s winless streak by crushing them by 4 goals to 1. 110 totally dominated against a Mauled side that was under strength and had no subs. An early goal by Mosquito sucked the life out of Mauled and two quality goals by McDonald finished the game as a contest. McLachlan scored a fourth at the beginning of the second half as they threatened to run away with it. Mauled were handed a consolation goal, literally, as the 110 keeper inexplicably reached out of his area to pick up the ball. Cattermole scored the penalty with aplomb. A great performance by 110, who after McDonald’s heroic went to celebrate with a burger at well know fast food joint!!!

Athletico v Meercats

This was a realy entertaining game throughout. Both teams enjoyed good spells, with the Meercats having the better of the possesion and clear chances. The goal came mid way through the first half, a fine though ball saw tom Forforth race through, he managed to just clip the ball outside of the area and watched it roll over the line as he untangled himself from the brave Athletico keeper Andy Sanders. Steve Snell played well at the back for Athletico along with guess player Rob Leaver, pinging a couple of delightful balls over the back of the Meercats defence. Athletico's skipper Sanders made four really top draw saves in the second hal to keep Athletico in with a chance, but the Weigton boys kept their composure and looked assured come the end of the game.

NVA stretched their, already impressive, unbeaten record this season with a 3 - 1 victory over Angel. The 'midfield ricochet' halfway line effect was considerably less noticable as the midfield tracked back to defend whenever needed and it also appears that Rob used up all his chance missing in the preseason friendly, netting two goals with some good finishing, his hat trick only being prevented by the goalkeeper's studs.
Ben also managed a couple of powerful shots, one of which was hit so hard that if your sky box suddenly lost the signal from its satellite that shot was probably the reason.
Angel's goal came directly after halftime with a run straight from the kickoff, I think we were too distracted by Rob's 'don't let in a quick goal after half time like we usually do' half time team talk and let in a quick goal after half time like we usually do.
Dave Gadie finished off Angel's hopes of sharing the points with a goal created by sheer persistence on his part, causing their defender to inexplicably not be able to pass two foot back to his keeper. Angel had some chances, with Al making a couple of saves, but overall our defence stood firm, especially with the extra help from the midfield. Energy levels all over the pitch seemed higher this week and that was without our fittest player, lets keep it up lads.
I believe this result leaves us top of the table, with the highest goal difference and two of the top scorers in the golden boot table but let's remember, we had a very similar start to last season and ended up below the black socks. For the reason highlighted below this can never happen again.

Also of note is a new cup to be introduced into the league, the 'yet to be named' cup. This will be given to whichever team out of us and the Black sox/Athletic Pathetico finish highest in the league. So guys with that cup, the league and the cup proper to come we are up for the triple, handily most of the players in our squad are usually up for a triple of anything.

Starky misses a sitter as NVA beat the draw specialists

Still not a single point dropped this season for the NVA with a 1 - 0 victory over the Black Sox. Dave Gadie rifled a shot home almost directly from the kickoff to put us one up, quite possibly the fastest goal ever in the Beverley Soccer Sixes and our defence, marshalled by Chris as always and backed up by some good saves from Al between the sticks, kept them out for the remainder of the match. You could tell at times that we hadn't played together for a while as our shape often fell apart, especially when defending, but this may have been partly due to our master tactician having to leave after half time due to our mascot taking a hit on the back. She is fine now, we think the scoreline was more of a shock to her than the hit. Black Sox claimed to be a stronger unit than last year so we may well have a good chance in this league this year, especially if we can work out why our midfield seem to bounce off the halfway line whenever the opposition have the ball in our half.

Oh, and Starky missed an absolute sitter.

In other matters, looking around myself in the fantasy football I see that it only appears to be Karl and I that are still flying the NVA league flag in the Cup. Most disappointing guys, most disappointing.

Playing in a winter wonderland

It was a long, long wait but at last yellow wednesday returned. Sporting our new range of hatwear we all arrived at the ground, Mr Stark happy to be amongst us and also sporting a cherished NVA hat as he was warming it for Rob who was late arriving.

"Is there still snow on the pitch?" questioned Al peering through the gloom as we wandered over to the pitch. On arriving at the hallowed turf it was evident that he was wrongm but not by much. Not snow but ice was still very much present on the pitch, Bishop Burton's famous underpitch refridgeration working wonders to keep the grass fresh. Around ten minutes later Jay and his reffing fraternity had arrived, kicked some ice, shaken their heads and bogged off home. Match abandoned.

However, being proper men we were not taking this lightly and not long later a friendly 11 a side had been organised; the mighty Yellows and a couple of Angels, including their keeper, versus blacks sox and the remaining angels. As we all know unscheduled friendly 11 a side matches always finish with double figures goals wise for both sides, this is why we were all rather surprised when the whistle blew at full time and the score was 0 - 0. (I say 'when the whistle blew' I actually mean 'when we realised the Black Sox keeper had gone home'). The lack of goals was partly because the Black Sox approached the game in the same way they approach the 6 a side, attacking was a bit of an afterthought. This was demonstrated beautifully when they had a corner and there was only one opposition player in our box, looking bewildered, lost and alone like he had only gone up by mistake.

Two words can explain the lack of goals at the other end; Rob Kennington. Four excellent chances were created and four excellent chances went begging. I'm no striker but you should really be hitting the target from one yard out, shouldn't you and an unmarked header in front of goal should, surely, equate to a goal? Then again, I suppose you've got to get yourself in the right position in the first place to get the opportunity to miss chances. There were, to be fair, also several excellent saves from the opposition keeper.

The only other thing of note was the difference between words and action, umpteen times when the opposition had the ball our strikers and midfield would in unison shout 'DROP' and then, also in perfect unison, fail to move a single inch towards our goal, leaving my aging legs to run up and down not quite reaching either end in time. Team game guys. Tut.

It was good to be back on the pitch at last and nice to see big Al getting a run around outfield but worrying that we still don't seem to be able to finish, I think all of the NVA players on the pitch had at least one chance and none of us buried them, hopefully we've used up all our misses before the league proper begins. Since shooting is about all we practice pregame it should come good soon, shouldn't it?

Xmas Do

Our company is having a rubbish sounding Xmas do, so a few of us planned to branch out on our own and just do the traditional Beer/Curry night.

The people that wanna come are all NVA or Ex NVA so it seems sensible to combine this with an NVA xmas piss up. All are welcome (ladies too, if you want). If we want to get a curry (Mirchi or Akash) sorted then we need numbers ASAP as it may already be booked.

The date is set for December 17th (friday), plan is few beers straight after work, curry (or takeaway if curry is booked), more beer, Cross Keys for dancing.

Attendees will be required to wear an Xmas jumper of their choosing. (Dave will be required to organise a dance off).

Weighton secure title with another brace from Carlin...

Weighton Sunday v Mauled FC

Weighton started off quick with Carling showing off his great touch and turns. It wasn't long til the first goal came as Broomfield played the ball to Carling, who took a 1 time shot on the turn which went into the bottom left corner; great goal! Weighton 1-0. Mauled started to pressure Weighton with a long ball from the goal keeper. Weighton couldnt handle this direct approach and Moore managed to get on the end of one with a great finish! 1-1. Mauled started to slack and showed poor marking in the latter stages. Carling, the main man, was left free and the ball was played through to him, he passed it into the net to make the score 2-1 and seal the title for his team! Athletico Pathetico v Little Scamps

Scamps and Onetouch played out a 0 v 0 draw, but the score line only tells half the story. Scamps totally dominated the play with new signing Moses causing all kinds of problems for the OneTouch defence, but not for the first time this season they could not find the back of the net. A combination of good goalkeeping from onetouch man of the match Sanders and poor finishing meant that the frustrated Scamps drew a blank yet again. There were times that Onetouch couldn’t get out of their own half and if Scamps can somehow find their shooting boots next season, they will be a force to be reckoned with in Division One. - Report by Uzzell

NVA v Angel

Angel marched onto the pitch in their striking new kit, finally looking the part after 5 full seasons!!! However the team was somewhat depleated, with top scorer Marcel Velia out with a back injury, and midfield generals Bell and Page unavailable. That meant a rare full appearance for Lee Eastwood up front. NVA, celebrating the birth of Skipper Bill Collins baby daughter (CONGRATULATIONS), who took control from the off. Chris Harley was in impressive form at the back, snuffing out any promising attacks, and Kennington in the middle of the park dictated play going forward. Just on the stroke of half time it was Kennington who controlled a great through ball and tucked the ball home, although the angel keeper did make a great attempt and nearly kept it out. In the second half Angel began to press, and it was Lee 'Hotshot Clint' Eastwood who managed to squeeze the ball under the NVA keeper from a close range to level the score. With time running out, Alan in the NVA goal pumped a long, straight (for the first time that night) ball forward, Kennington plucked the ball out of the sky with a supern first touch, turned and clipped the ball home with 30 secs left to nick the win. - Report by Jay

We got there in the end...

The last game of the season had a very end of season vibe about it not surprisingly...

We were shorn of our leader with Bill off tending to baby Willow (congrats again guys), Japanese George made his second appearance and remains unbeaten in the yellow (not sure many others can claim that!) Angel lined up without three of their normal threats, and it soon became apparent the replacements were not really up to the job, as we knocked it about comfortably for the first five minutes. Midway through the first half the goal our play deserved finally came an inaccurate throw from thier keeper was met by Ben's head. Ben's header found Rob clean through without a defender in sight and he did the rest.

So far so good, then we got complacent...

Bouyed by a couple of decent bursts from the back i decided to take them on pretty much everytime i had the ball, which generally worked OK but did lead to a couple of hairy moments, nothing we couldn't deal with though. Then i tried a new approach of passing their striker the ball directly, he knocked it to his mate and they were level. Oops.

We still had all the ball and were missing countless chances up top aside from a dodgy moment when Al decided to go all 'juggler' on us on his goal line before eventually gathering the ball.

We were pressing hard at this point for a winner with pretty much everyone up front, chances came and went and we were getting desperate.

One moment they had three men advancing on an isolated Al and it looked lik we might throw away all three points, but the big man kept them out before unleasehing one of his famous long balls which Rob took it down nicely before finally knocking in another goal.

Collective sighs of relief and three points in the bag. Unfortunately Black Sox/Untouchables/Athletico Pathetico shorn of their new striker reverted to type and claimed a nil nil with scamps allowing them to finish above us for the first time.

A couple of weeks off then it's cup night again, where we need to prove it was not a fluke.

Athletico finally score the victory over NVA...

Athletico Pathetico v Not Very Athletic
NVA’s good run of results came to a shuddering halt at the hands of a jubilant Onetouchables as they slumped to a 2 v 1 defeat. Onetouch dominated the early play and deservedly strolled into a 2 goal lead after some dodgy defending by NVA as they lost possession in their own half twice. It was Baxter and Gray who hit a goal apiece to send the Medlin brothers wild with delight. It was all looking so comfortable for Onetouch after the break until NVA were awarded a penalty by Ref Uzzell after keeper Sanders was adjudged to have stepped out of the penalty area. Gadie smashed home the penalty, much to Sanders disgust. This gave NVA a boost and although they pushed for an equaliser, the Onetouch back line held firm.

Angel v Mauled FC

In a compelling match it was the determination, pace and finishing of Marcel Velia that made the difference on the night. 6 goals in 24 minutes, with countless other chances made this one of the most open and enjoyable matches in Sixes history. Both sides gave all they had, but Angel proved the stronger, with Bell and Velia working superbly together from midfiled to the front line. The Angel defence also played its part and has been much more consistent this term, with the steady partnership of Johnny and Craig. For Mauled Dave Moore bagged a brace and looked threatening throughout, but it was once again keeper Lee Stephenson who took their MOTM award. He thwarted Bell, Velia and Angel on numerous occasions to keep the score competitive. Mauled were 3-0 down by half time (Velia 2, Bell 1), but pulled back with 2 early second half goals (Moore 2) and looked to be going well. Angel then hit them on a quick break and Velia completed an impressive hat-trick, sealing the win and all 3 points.

Note: Football is a game of opinions and our match this week was no different, there was Referee Uzzells opinion of the game and the correct opinion of the game, both are outlined below.

Weighton almost there as NVA beat Scamps...

Not Very Athletic v Little Scamps - Mr Uzzell's opinion

NVA won this one by 1 v 0, but the score line didn’t tell the whole story. It was a strange game in which Scamps dominated possession with a fine passing display only to be denied by the NVA keeper who flung himself around like a slightly aging leaping salmon. Yet, it was NVA, who despite playing an abject long ball game for long spells, had the more clear cut chances. It is a good job Kennington scored the winner, as his team mates may have lynched him after he missed his 2nd penalty of the season and also completely air shoted the ball when it seemed harder to miss. Scamps were left feeling dejected at the final whistle and NVA relieved. - Report by Uzzell

Not Very Athletic v Little Scamps - The correct opinion

A one nil victory for the NVA suggests a close game but this was not the case, NVAs tactics for the game were spot on and, with some improved finishing, the scoreline could easily have been 3 or four nil.
The start of the game was all Scamps possession, matched by some excellent NVA defending and even though they had possession for a full thre minutes all Scamps could manage was a wayward shot from nearer the half way line than the penalty area, this was a prime example of how the rest of the game panned out. Scamps had more of the possession but could do nothing with it wheras NVA made good use of the ball whenever it was in their control, allowing the Scamps to come onto them before hitting them on the counter with fast moving, slick football. Scamps may have been guilty of overattacking what they perceived to be a an inferior side and the NVA tactics took perfect advantage of this, with the Scamps keeper being the far busier of the two. Scamps never looked like scoring wheras NVA looked like they could with every attack, taking the full three points even after missing not only a penalty but a hatful of one on one chances. Not only did the usual NVA keeper, on one of his few appearances outfield, pierce the Scamps defence setting up a clear goalscoring opportunity but even the current gloveman managed to hit the bar!

Athletico Pathetico v Mauled FC

On form Athletico made a new signing tonight, 'Willow' from Barcelona, making a guest appearance, made a smashing debut for Athletico, even getting on the scoresheet! Atletico started off well on top, the passing was played about in Mauled FC 's half and it was switched across to Scott Medlin who was free on the left, he took a good touch and placed it into the goal well played! The pressure carried on as Athletico dominated the play. Willow managed to battle his way through the Mauled defence and he was one on one with the goal keeper and smashed it in, although Lee Stephenson in goal very nearly made the save! 2 nil!. The sides came out after half time and it was very much the same as the 1st half! The pressure mounted on Mauled as the ball was played across the box but their defender stepped into the box - penalty! Gray stepped up to take it smashed it to right hand corner but it looked as if the keeper had made the save but it slipped into the goal! 3-0. Sanders didnt have much to do in goal for Athletico in this game and Scott Medlin had great game! The unbeaten run goes on for Athletico - Report ny Jacko

Weighton stay top with last gasp winner...

Weighton v NVA (Dave Gadie lucky to escape season long ban after daring to wear not just gloves, but illuminous gloves during a game - you have been warned!!!)

In an entertaining game it was Weighton who took the spoils to retain the top spot. Weighton started well and played some great pass and move football, but NVA never really looked threatened in the final third. Mid way through the half NVA began to get a hold of the ball, and after intercepting a loose pass, Chris Harley made a Baresi esqe run forward with the ball, waltzing between the midfield before sliipping a superb ball into the pass of rob Kennington, who made no mistake with a great finish. Weighton got their heads together at half time and looked more like their usual self in the second period. Passing between Elvidge and Carlin made inroads into the NVA defence, and the breakthough eventually came from the prolific Carlin, who tucked in from close range to draw things level. NVA looked to have earned a deserved point with some good defending in the latter stages, but with less than a minute to go they rushed a free kick which was gathered by the Weighton defence, and played forward into the path of Carlin who finish in style to snatch the points. Little Scamps v Mauled FC

Scamps ran out comfortable 2 v 0 winners over an injury ravaged Mauled. The greater cohesiveness of the Scamps team told as they out passed, out thought and out fought a Mauled team that seemed to have been thrown together at the last minute. Scamps were delighted with the victory after goals from Bibby and Dunn secured it. Uzzell

Athletico v Angel

Athletico seemed to play the same as last week sitting back and hitting on the break and it showed again! Angel looked on top keeping possesion well and having a few good efforts but One Touchables showed good spirit and defended well! Once again Sanders played well making strong saves. In the second half Angel were on top hitting the post! Just after the ball was bobbleing around the half way and Wright came in with a bullet shot which wizzed into the goal, amazing!! One Touchables went mad! great result for One Touchables but Angel will feel they deserved more! Jack

A rather unfortunate affair

With no substitutions available you would have expected fatigue to play an even larger role than usual on the match but every NVA player ran till the very last second, even the keeper was strutting around in his area like a spider in a sink.
The early play was a fairly even affair, no clear chances on goal at either end but with some nice football being played in the centre of the pitch by both sides. Then, after receiving the ball on the edge of his own semi circle, Chris Harley appeared to make a decision. He saw a gap through the centre and blasted into it, the opposition didn't seem comfortable with someone running at them with pace and Chris made the most of it making it deep into enemy territory before dropping an inch perfect pass to Rob on the edge of their box. Rob did what was needed, putting the ball neatly into the back of their net and top of the league Weighton were in shock. The rest of the first half saw some shots on goal at either end, with some good saves from the NVA keeper, but no more goals were scored leaving the scoreline at 1 - 0 to the NVA at the half time whistle.
The NVA team talk consisted of an urge not to panic, being 1 - 0 up at half time is not a situation which the NVA are used to being in, unfortunately the talk did not have the desired effect and the NVA players were definitely on edge during the second half. An early goal for Weighton did not help this and although NVA were playing as well as their opposition when with the ball, they were looking more frail when defending against it. The second Weighton goal was caused partly by the oppositions superior fitness, and inferior years, and partly due to some desperate tackles from the NVA where just standing the opposition was all that was required. Weighton counter attacked and the NVA midfield were unable to get back to help out their out-numbered defence, Weighton pushed the ball out wide to their overlapping player and he buried it passed the flailing keeper.
A disappointing end to a game in which NVA were arguably the better side and a scoreline which drops us further towards the mire at the bottom of the table, however every player played his heart out and should be proud of the performance, if not the result. In my opinion everyone earnt their hat today.

Right guys, we've reached the halfway campaign in this year's season and results haven't quite been as hoped. However our most recent results have been a little more promising and we're not yet out of contention for our second lot of silverware. This Weighton lot took us rather by surprise last year, the lack of presence of the easily evaded 'Hairy Cornflake' at the back and considerably more discipline than had previously been shown led to a sound drubbing for the brave boys in yellow. I've decided that what we need is a little more encouragement, and nothing is more encouraging than the prospect of an NVA bobble hat. Our Kit accessories supplier, my mum and her knitting needles, has begun the production of the NVA hats but you lot are only getting one if you earn it (and give me £2.50 materials contribution), as voted for by each other. So let's go out there and get totally hatted.

Weighton Sunday v Little Scamps

In what was billed as a bit of a grudge match after the previous encounter between these two side got a bit tasty, the game actually passed off without incident as Scamps cruised it 3 v 0 against Weighton Sunday. Heathcote scored two and Naylor got one as their dominance showed. Surprisingly, MW heads went down quickly as they fell behind and this seemed to play right into the hand of Scamps who used their superior fitness to give Weighton a bit of a run around. Elvidge and Co will be looking for a big improvement next week, and you never know, their player manager may even make his first appearance off the bench in 3 seasons... then again, maybe not. - Report By Uzzell

NVA v One Touchables

This started off quite even with both teams creating chances. The breakaway came midway through first half when Hebblethwaite had a great dribble and laid it off to Stark who smashed it away; 1-0 NVA! The second half was pretty much the same with both teams creating chances and a Onetouchable nearly got the equaliser when their forward thundered his effort off one post onto the other. It had beaten the keeper but couldn't find its way over the line. NVA 1 - 0 Onetouchables. - Report by Jacko

Mauled FC v Angel

Angel turned up with only 5 players (a couple having spat their dummies after last week's result!), but managed to draft in a guest player prior to kick off. The game wasn't a pretty affair but did have moments of quality, not least a couple of great solo runs from Marcel Velia and some top saves from both keepers. Chances were created at each end but it was not a night for the forward players. Angel took the lead mid way through the second half. Velia brought the ball forward, it was played out wide and then nudge back inside perfectly, to be struck as clean as you like into the top corner from fully twenty yards, giving the Mauled keeper Lee Stevenson no chance. MOM went to Angel Garcia, who was very disciplined in his defensive duties, particularly in the second half, as his team pressed for a goal. - Report by Jay

Weighton still 100% after controversial win...

MW Sunday v Angel

MW Sunday bested Angel in this often ill tempered match in which Angel believed they hadn’t got the rub of the green with ref Uzzell’s decisions. Controversy surrounded MW’s first goal by Brommfield, as the Angel players thought the ball had gone out for a throw in. Ref Uzzell played on and the MW player drove the ball home from a tight angle. Angel were soon level through Marcel Velia who struck it sweetly enough from distance, although there were questions raised over the lack of effort by the keeper. MW went back into the lead as Elvidge scored the decisive match winning goal. Fouls punctuated much of the second half and Angel’s Bell displayed his unhappiness to ref Uzzell at the end of the game.

NVA v Little Scamps

Little scamps started off with good passing play and really looked on top of NVA. A cross was played into Grey who struck the ball from inside the box but no goal was given as he was in the box upon contact. Grey didnt have to wait long though to get his next chance and he managed to put it away. In the second half Little Scamps got a quick goal from Hunter who took it past one defender and slotted it in the goal as the crowd went wild! NVA just didnt seem awake and were punished with another goal for Scamps, as Gardener tapped his chance into the net. Towards the end the ball was in Little Samps half for a fair bit, with Kennington showing some good skill upfront for NVA. Little scamps manged to break away and a NVA player ran into the box - PENALTY! Hunter stepped up..... GOAL! hunter got his 2nd. Little Scamps 4 - 0 NVA Praises were made to referee Jack Grieve from the Little Scamps after the game, well done Jacko!

Athletico Pathetico v Mauled FC

Mauled welcomed back skipper and keeper Lee Stephenson from holiday, and were grateful after the game, with Lee making four outstanding saves during the match. Up the other end, the Athletico keeper, Andy Sanders, also had a good game in net (although he was 8 mins late so he isn't getting too much praise!). Both teams created good chances in the first period, with Mauled looking the more dangerous. Cattermole had a couple of fine solo runs, turning defenders in side and out, but he was unable to find a telling finish. In the second period Athletico came out the stronger, with quick pressing from the front, solid build up play, and neat interplay between the two front men. Ultimately though it was a game for the men between the sticks, with honours even - Bagsy reffing the return match!

Weighton Utd crowned Back 2 Back Champions!

On a beautiful September night it was Weighton Utd who walked away with the cup to make it back to back wins after a nervy penalty shoot-out against Not Very Athletic.

The group stages saw each team play 3 games, with the top team from each group plus the best second place of the three groups progressing into the knock-outs. (see results below)

The first semi saw NVA v 110 played out a goal less draw and moved into a penalty shootout to decide the winner. 110 took an early advantage after a save by their keeper gave them a 1-0 score after the first round of kicks, however NVA keeper Will 'Cat' Collins made a save from 110's final kick to bring it level. In sudden death it was the composure of NVA which proved vital and saw them into the final - a great achievement for a team which battled to finish anywhere but last in the league for the first three seasons.

The second semi was much of the same, with Weighton Utd v Waterside unable to break the deadlock. Dan Moore (Waterside) and Martin Moss (Weighton) had their usual tough and bruising but fair battle for supremacy, with neither giving an inch. Again penalties proved vital to seperate the teams. Moss stepped up first and put last years final miss well and truly behind him with a smashed shot. Everyone else scored until it was down to Moore. Unfortunatley it was not his night. After missing a kick in the group stages (saved excellently by the Borussia keepers stacked stomach muscles!), redemption wasn't on Dan's side, and his kick was saved again to send Waterside crashing out in their final Soccer Sixes appearance. Before the celebrations, Moss was already on to Moore to try and recruit him to the Weighton side for the coming season!

In an unfamiliar position NVA did not look over come in their most important match to date, and played pretty well throughout the final. However it was a game of defence reather than attack, with Moss(Weighton) and Harley (NVA) looking solid at the back for their respective teams. After an back and forth 10mins, the ref had to call on panalties again to decide this years Champions.

NVA again went behind in the first round, before keeper Collins made an amazing save with his face from a powerblaster of a shot. seeing 7 balls instead of 1, Collins was close to making another save on a couple of ocassions, but the kicks ultimately went through all 6 outfield players and onto the keepers. Weighton's keeper tucked his penalty away before the star seeing collins stepped up. Before the ref had chance to toot his whistle, Will had stroked a beautiful kick into the bottom corner, but the ref had no choice but to insist on a re-take as the whistle to signal the kick had not been blown. Much to the chargrin on the NVA boys, Collins stepped up again but this time his kick was saved and Weighton were Champions!

NVA walked away with a medal round their neck, their heads held high and the accolade of 'Peoples Champions' being chanted from the crowds.

MW Sunday destroyed Champions ellect to really open up the league table. Shwoboating became the order of the day in a great performace from the Weighton boys. Borussia never really got to grips with the game, and suffered their 3rd defeat in a row - prior to last week, Borussia had won 8 and lost only 2 and were semingly cruizing to the title. The result now means that victory for AJ's, over MW Sunday, will drop Borussia into second, with AJ's taking the title and promotion. A win for MW will all but seal a 3rd place finish.

Beverley Knights recorded their first actual victory (not a 5-0 default victory) in the history of the Black Sox / Knights 4 season run. The Black Knights took the lead early on through Caddy who was delighted and celebrated well. Angel didn't seem to get into their stride and never really threatened Sanders in the Knights goal. In the second half Gray went on an amazing run past two players and smashed a shot into the net to seal an historic victory!!! The results also lifts Knights of the bottom of the table, with angel now 2 pts behind, all be it with a game in hand against Deportivo.

AJ's continued their impressive form with a very convincing 4-0 victory over NVA. With a couple of key players out, AJ's had to call on their reserves, with Bointon and Lever stepping in to action. AJ's gave a great team performance and controlled the game throughout. Lever scored 2 goals, with 1 each for Bointon and Blake (not only 4 goals, but three collectors items; Lever and Blake are not what you would describe as prolific strikers!). NVA looked throughly out of sorts. Kennington was way off his normal level (due largely to the fact he had just done 1.5hrs of pre-season training), and top scorer Hebblethwaite also looked out of sorts and frustrated. Lets hope Athletic can finish with a positive result in the final game of the season.

The last match of the night saw a re-arranged fixture between Knights and Borussia Teeth. In what was an enjoyable match to watch / referee, Borussia recorded what could be a league winning victory, although it took SIX balls to finish the job. Crease and Burns were in great form and looked dangerous throughout, but neither could keep the ball lower than the 30ft fence, with 7 shots / deflections flying high and wide. Burns did break the deadlock with a bizare goal after Medlin tried to play a ball out of defence, only to see his pass deflect of burns and into the net, with keeper Sanders stranded. The second half saw Borussia take full control and create several good chance, but it was Sanders who managed to keep the score at 1-0 until late on, when Crease out muscled his marker and ran clear before finishing excellently to seal the victory. Burns nearly scored a 3rd with a technically brilliant overhead kick, which was applauded by both teams, but it was Sanders again who managed to force the save. Borussia must now wait to see what happens in the next round of games, having done all they can this season.

NVA 4 - 0 Angel

A return to form for the mighty NVA last night saw us record our biggest win of the season so far. Shorn of regular keeper Bill, Dave B unexpectedly made his long awaited comeback between the sticks, largely untroubled but for a couple of late saves 'for the cameras' Dave kept a clean sheet, leaving Bill sweating on his place. Another making a comeback/guest appearance was Tom filling in for Dave G and taking his place alongside me in defence. Another change was Pete lining up as centre forward after a useful showing in the warm up in the last couple of weeks.

A low key start saw us keep possession well but left their keeper largely untroubled aside from couple of saves from Ben which kept them in the game until half time. The second half kicked off better, with the Pete experiment deemed a failure he had dropped back into midfield to give Rob a shot up top and we finally started to open them up. Encouraged by keeping us out in the first half Angel started to commit more players forward and we made use of the extra space with Pete regularly robbing them in midfield and feeding the strikers well.

Can't really remember the goals particularly well to be honest, there was a nice through ball from Tom for one, a exquisite ball out of defence up to the strikers by myself for another and a comedy moment when both their midfielders left the ball for each other and Pete robbed the pair of them. By the end everyone was trying their luck with Ben not happy about having to do his bit defensively with all these chances flying about and his top scorer position under threat.

A couple of late chances for them were dealt with by Dave trying his hardest to work off the extra pounds piled on during his extended period of inactivity on the sidelines.

Ultimately a four-nil win, a hattrick for Rob and one for Ben was the least we desrved and we departed happy. Some dreadful snooker followed as did a good showing on the quizzers in both Green D & Cross Keys.

Black Sox next week is as ever a must win, as with the gap above us not showing any sign of decreasing we are sat in the no mans land in the table needing to make our game in hand count. AJs and Deportivo will follow, three wins could see us rise right up to be pushing for second. Roll on next week and with Brinham pledging to see the season out in goal we may once again witness the gaffer's familiar stumbling runs through midfield.

MW Sunday recorded their first win since the reverse fixture of this game back in week 2. Nick Carlingot back in the scoring grove with both goals as MW saw off Angel 2-0. MW now have the chance to put daylight between themselves and next weeks opponents NVA. Angel face second place AJ's, but will need all 3 points to move off the bottom of the table.

AJ's v Depo was a tight affair with some good football at times. The addition of Rob Lever to the Depo defence was a shrewed move, as Rob had a blinding game. Another new addition was to the AJ's line up. He made some great runs and caused problems throughout the game. Ultimately the game was decided by a rush of blood to the head by Depo's stand in keeper, who decided to grab a ball which was running dead and was also outside of his area. Chris Williamson somehow managed to squeeze the resultant spot kick through his legs for the winning goal, which took AJ's above Depo and into second.

Borussia started off well with an early break through Crease to take the lead and to take him clear at the top of the scoring charts. NVA were playing good football but couldn't find a way past the Borussia keeper. Iit took a while after half time for the next goal to come and it was worth waiting for! A brilliant ball was played over the top to Burns who volleyed the ball into the goal. NVA were still playing good passing play and Kennington managed to dribble past the last man and put it in the net, but by this point it was too late to rescue anything from the game.

Review:
Borissa Teeth were up against Black Knights. Borussia took the lead with a good finish from Pat Crease, who took his tally to 4 for the season - his team have only scored 5!. Borussia played some good football and were very direct going for goal. Black knights also created some good chances but the end product was poor. Once again the Black Knights failed to score. Maybe it's time for Sanders to start scouring the free transfers; I hear Joe Cole is available? Borussia top the table at the mid point season break with a game in hand and look strong to go forward and take the Championship.

AJs put in a very assured performance to win against MW Sunday. In a good balanced match, AJs showed the better composure in front of goal to win 2 V 0 thanks to goals from the on fire Gaz Parkinson and Greg Usher. AJ’s look a good team at this level thanks to their recent recruits and can only be helped by the return of Nick Rawnsley from injury. MW Sunday shouldn’t feel down after this defeat though. With better finishing the result could have been a lot different.

The final game saw in two sides in decent form. Deportivo have finally got to grips with short, fast paced passing and look a much better side then last season. NVA have made great strides this season and even topped the league for a couple of weeks. The addition of Ben ' Emile' Hebbelthwaite was a great move by the skipper, and the forward came up with another goal this week. Unfortunately for the Athletic is was merely a consolation as Depo had taken a strong two goal lead through Peach and a cracker from Firth, which almost decapitated the NVA keeper.

England mirror the NVA

There are a fair few similarities between the England team and the mighty Notvery and this fact is not diminished by the injury to Rio Ferdinand:

Goalkeeper:
Difficult to choose the better keeper of the two available, current incumbant having some serious problems with his distribution.

Injury to key defender:
Chris Harley, NVA's main defensive man and backup captain recently picked up a knock , the same has happened to Rio Ferdinand who does the same job for England.

Striker that scores a hatful of goals but not neccessarily when it matters:
Ben has 4 goals to his name already, but missed a few opportunities to win it against AJ's and Black Socks. Rooney scores plenty in the premiership but can he do it when England really need it, or does he just wander around getting grumpy?

And finally both teams have a player that doesn't train and has trouble playing two games on the trot.

So with these similarities will it be England for the world cup and NVA for the championship. Or both sets of players down the pub crying into their beer way before the end of their respective tournaments?

Peach scores a Peach for Angel - unfortunately he plays for Deportivo!!!
NVA signed Pete Watkins at the start of the season from Black knights and he must of been looking forward to this game! NVA took the lead through Hebblethwaite who has now scored 4 this season. Black Knights did not give up though and Taylor did brillantly to take on two players with some great skill before slotting the ball into the net. Black Knights finally ended their goal draught against their old rivals!

Deportivo were back to their old unpredictable ways after four weeks of stability and free flowing football, and by all accounts were well off track in this game. Angel finally managed to get some points on the board after four straight defeats. The boys got back to their regular formula of through balls for Marceli Velia to chase and work with, and it proved telling yet again. A great ball from the back by Dave Buttery was met by Velia who took a good touch before hitting a sweet finish. Angel furthered thier lead after an own goal by last week's hero Harry Peach, who played a comfortable ball back to his keeper, only to see Callum Eade in goal lose his footing and then watch the ball roll into the empty net - stinker!

The final game of the night between AJ's v Borussia Teeth was postponed due to injuries and illness in the AJ's camp and will now be played on Wed 16 June at 7pm.

High flying NVA hit by Injury Crisis

Notvery's good start to the season could be faltering with the news of a second major injury blow of the week. First Dave Brinham, Midfield playmaker and king of the backroom at the Cross Keys, was put out of action for at least a month with a badly twisted knee. Now Defensive dynamo and 'one run a match' wonder Chris Harley is also out with a possible bruised rib. With both Dave Gadie and new boy Steve Kennington also unavailable for this week the squad has been decimated. When questioned manager Will Collins, usually a polite and understated gentleman, said 'Cock'. I think this tells us all we need to know.
So if you have some boots, are spare this wednesday and aren't a girl, or don't look like one, feel free to apply via this blog.

Harry Peach scores a peach as Deportivo go top...

The game between Deportivo v Borussia Teeth saw what must be the best goal ever scored at Soccer Sixes. Form man Harry Peach put a megs on the first player, skipped the second then smashed an absolute rocket into the top corner from close to the half way line, leaving the borussia keeper rooted like a 200year old redwood. Deportivo continued to dictate play with some great pass and move football (finally!!!) but couldn't add to their single goal. Borussia did create a few chances, but nothing that really bothered keeper Callum Eade. The win takes Depo top of the table and Peach also stays top of the scoring charts - what a finish!

Not Very Athletic’s good form continued as they ran out 2 v 0 winners over a frustrated Angel. As the game kicked off it was all Angel, as they kept possession like Barcelona for over a minute, only for Darren ‘Rage’ Page to fail to convert a glorious opportunity. After that though, Athletic clawed their way back into the game and scored a good goal through Hebblethwaite. Angel continued to knock on the door ("Knock on the door, they hardly made it up the drive" - C Harley) but often lost the ball and NVA played a solid counter attacking game. They confirmed their victory with a late goal from Kennington, taking him joint top in the scoring charts. A good day for all Not Very Athletic fans, although a player I spoke to after the game seemed to be worried that they may gain promotion and get hammered every week in the top division. We will have to see if their good form “wanes” later in the season.

In the final game Beverley Knights miserly defense continued to frustrate the opposition. Led by Captain / Manager Andy ('The Gut' - brother Sanders) Sanders, the Knights have only conceded 2 goals in their last 7 matches - a stat that would have been the other way around last season! It's just a shame they can't find a goalscorer!!! MW Sunday continue to fluctuate. For a new team their form is pretty good and they will be picking up more points once they settle into the league.

Ravaged by injuries after their massive victory last week Notvery Athletic had to play with no subs. Even more unusually the lack of players meant that Dave 'one leg' Brinham was forced to play in a position that was all new to him, defence. Fortunately he was playing alongside Chris' The wall' Harley and Angel, although they played some excellent keep ball straight from the off, were making very little forward progress. When in possession Notvery were looking dangerous going forward but it was a counter attack from Angel that got the first shot on target of the game, blasted in from a tight angle it was clipped onto the bar by Will 'too lazy to play outfield' Collins and away to safety. This proved to be Angel's only shot on target of the match.
Notvery's first goal came shortly afterwards; a well worked move, expertly finished by Ben 'Hebalthwait' Hebblethwaite a real contender against Rob 'it's too cold' Kennington for the NVA top scorer this season. As the game went on some other stuff happened, then the ref blew the whistle for half time and we changed ends. After the restart other things continued to happen, with the tide of the game firmly in NVA's favour and eventually an excellent pass from 'the wall' from within our half of the pitch found Ben 'I don't carry cash' Hebblethwaite who brought it down and crossed for Rob' if I miss someone gets hurt' Kennington on the edge of the box who deftly controlled before burying it in the back of the net.
The good NVA work continued, Al 'trampler' Worthington showed some real determination with an excellently timed lunging tackle, a perfectly legal tackle that the opposition weren't to happy about. Rob 'I need a poo' Kennington had an opportunity to put the game to bed when ending up clean through on the keeper, but had far to much time to think and put it wide.
The rest of the match petered out, punctuated only by Will' wilkinson' COllins slicing a few long balls into touch, basically to get himself noticed so little he had to do in the match.
A further injury to Dave 'took a grenade in Nam' Brinham left him hobbleing around just outside our penalty box for the last few minutes of the game, but Angel were unable to capitalize and the game finished 2 - 0 to the NVA.
So, two victories on the bounce, a clean sheet, 6 goals in two matches and two players joint top on the Golden boot table. Things are looking good for the NVA. We wear the yellow...

Not Very Athletic scored a cracking result this week, smashing MW Sunday 4 - 1. not only was this the biggest win of the season so far in either league, it was NVA's biggest victory EVER! Manager Will Collins commented "...and that makes it four, this Not Very Athletic team have shown what they are really made of, routing a side that are contenders for the league! The unprecedentedly large crowd are in heaven! In the end, when all is said and done, today, football is the winner" - never a truer word said.
MW Sunday gaffer Andrew Hodgson was very gracious in defeat as he positively stated "that the best team had won on the night"

AJ's looked in good from against Angel. New signing Greg Usher was impressive throughout, but AJ's didn't have all the play. Marcel Velia and Darren 'Rage' Page played some great stuff for Angel, and were supported well by the whole team in one of the best performances in a long time. They even had the ball in the back of the net after a great piece of build up play, but referee rowley deemed the final shot was taken inside the area and disallowed the goal. If both teams continue in this fashion, they should soon start progressing up the league table.

The final game of the group saw Deporting face the Beverley Knights. Deportivo welcomed back Mike Helyard and Paul Lockwood to the starting line up and the team looked a lot brighter than it has in previous weeks. The Depo boys played some strong football and it was their top scorer Harry Peach who bagged the first to settle the nerves. Knights did have some good passages of play and created half a dozen good chances, but Callum Eade in net was in great form all night. Helyard wrapped up the points for Depo with a great finish, to see the Depo boys progress up the table.

Excellent performance

Possibly Notvery's greatest performance since its creation gave us a 4 - 1 victory, a scoreline that did not flatter us in the slightest. A brace for Ben and Rob aswell as some fantastic defending by Chris H enabled us to ease passed (Past?) the opposition and notch up our first points of the season. Excellent stuff all, next stop Angel. On a different note, I rather like the wonderful attempt at Ben's surname on the top scorers chart.

Borussia continued their improved form by taking their second win on the bounce, and recording more points this season than in the whole of last season! Borussia now have a week off while NVA take on new boys MW Sunday, who are also looking good...

The boys from Weighton's Sunday team recorded their first victory with a comfortable win over Angel. Craig Eastwood, deputising in the angel goal, had his fingers stung a few times and made two or three great saves to keep the score down.

In the final game AJ's and Deportivo played out what was always going to be a draw on paper. Both of these sides are draw specialists and have never been seperated by more than one goal in three season. The returning Lockwood bagged for Depo, while AJ's new boy Usher finished nicely for the green & whites

Premier League:
In a cracking opener to the league, the new boys of DTS Leconfield’s 110 squadron made their debut for the Trogs and ONE10 respectively. In a game that was all about bragging points back on camp, the intensity was red hot straight off and didn't miss a beat for the next 24 minutes. Tackles were big, shots were fierce and chances were limited.

Kev Bluff, making his final appearance in goal for ONE10 before passing the gloves on to one of the new boys made a couple of inspirational saves to keep the Trogs out, whilst up at the other end it was referee Uzzell who was keeping goals out; disallowing a goal which (according to the ONE10 boys) had bounced back of the inner stantion. Mr Uzzell believed it had struck the post and waved play on, but in the end it mattered little, as ONE10 marched away winners, 2 v 1.

Returning former Champions Shanghi made hard work of the first match back. The boys from SSR played some great stuff early on, but missed a hat full of chances and went in at half time only 1 v 0 up. BarceHullona pulled themselves together and got back to the basics which saw them finish last season on a 14 game unbeaten streak. Chris Newsam pulled the scores level midway through the second half, and while Shanghi wasted yet more chances and started to press and commit men forward in search of a winner, the boys from Bacre held their nerve, and Andy Martin converted the winner with a cheeky finish at the near post past the stranded Danny Ako with only 30 seconds left on the clock.

Last year’s runners up, Weighton Utd faced new boys PSV Hangover, lead by former M-Weasy wide boy Ben ‘Franko’ Franklin. The game turned out to be an early contender for match of the season, with 5 goals, great finishing and a controversial penalty decision. The game ebbed back and forth until PSV took control with a fine finish for the first goal.

Referee Uzzell then awarded a penalty to Weighton after the PSV keeper played the ball outside of his area. The ref was unaware that the keeper was only outside his box to return a ball to the neighbouring pitch, and had to awarded the penalty kick once the keeper played the ball. Martin Moss swept the ball home put Weighton back in the contest. In the end it was the new boys from PSV who took the spoils, winning a fine game 3 v 2, with Ed ‘Franz Gruddock Baresi’ Grady was in imperious form throughout!!! £5 please Ed.

Division 1:
The first match of the evening saw new boys MW Sunday face last year's most inconsistent team, Deportivo Lacatalent. MW were keen to mark a strong start to the season and showed signs of some good play. Deportivo continued in the form of last season, playing some fine stuff at times whilst smashing balls to the front man and gaining nothing at others.

The boys need to learn that they can all play pretty well and have the ability to play pass and move football, and not resort to big hoofs forward, particularly when 'strong man’ Mike Helyard isn’t playing. The final score was a fair 1 v 1 and both teams must be hoping to pick up more points next week.

Beverley Knights welcomed a stand in keeper in the form of Steve Snell, with regular keeper and captain Andy Sanders sidelined. Unfortunately for Steve, the long drive back over the bridge was not worth the 24 looooooooooooooooooooong minutes he had to endure during this game. There is not a whole bunch more I can say, except (as you’ve probably guessed), it finished 0v0!

The final game saw Borussia Teeth almost match last years points tally in a single game! The Teeth played some really good stuff going forward, and were combative and disciplined at the back. But for 3 really good saves from the Angel keeper, this could have been a drubbing. What didn’t help Angel’s cause was a lack of team play.

Movement was non-existent, no one seemed to want to pass and when they did get into the final third the finishing was not to their usual standard. Rich Bell of the Angel even substituted himself at one point, as frustration was starting to get the better of him. Maybe a team bonding session around Dave’s front bar is in order!

Now then, I have received the fixtures for the first game of the season, and therefore know the teams which our in our league. All looks much nicer for us, can't see us losing to any of this lot. I might even put a fiver on Dave to get a goal this season. I think our priority is to make sure the champion is ABD - Anyone But Deportivo.

The cup - how it actually happened

It appears there may still be some slight flaws in my cup predictor....

First my write up of our games then Jay's overall writeup:

2 draws and one defeat, not a bad result for the NVA in the cup, especially as we scored our ever first cup goal against the eventual tournament winners. First match, against ONE10 we were defensive, but did so very well and also managed the odd well constructed counter attack. A 0 - 0 finish to the match seemed a fair result.

Straight up with no rest we took on Weighton, the eventual winners of the tournament. This match started badly due to a little confusion with our formation. I had swapped out of goal with Al and was going up front, however Dave was far too loved up to listen to this fact and was wandering around near their penalty area muttering 'Da, Da' to himself. This left us somewhat understaffed at the back and the first goal for Weighton went in shortly afterwards. We replied well resulting in an excellent save by their keeper to deny Rob, which stopped us levelling at 1 - 1. Being a goal down in such a short game we had to attack and this led to some wonderful work down the right wing by Chris, robbing one of their players and going passed three others before crossing, yup Chris crossed after one of his runs, for Rob K to fire home. Our first ever cup goal. We eventually lost 3 - 1, a scoreline which flattered them a little.
Finally we took on Weighton sunday, who kicked us around the park for 10 minutes with the ref seemingly too distracted to notice. Finally one of them was shown a
yellow card, but I think the ref was actually reaching into his pocket for a lolly and accidentally grabbed the card instead. This match also ended in a 0 - 0 draw, leaving us joint third.
We played well overall, and if it wasn't for the confusion over the formation and an excellent save from their keeper I think we could have held our own against the tournament winners. With the league being split into two for this season we have a real chance of doing well.
On a final note our new signing, Pete, did some excellent work in the midfield and showed some talent, taking the big step up from the Black sox with consummate ease. Just don't expect him to header anything.

Congratulations to Weighton Utd, new Soccer Sixes Cup Winners.

Market Weighton Utd added to their second place league finish by winning the end of season cup. Weighton finished top of their group along with AJ's and Waterside, with Shanghi progressing as best 2nd place team.

The semi finals saw Weighton beat AJ's 1-0 after a fine finish by Tom Shaunessey. In the other semi, Waterside drew 0-0 with Shanghi for the second time in the night. Only a great save from the Shanghi keeper could seperate the teams, with the reigning cup holder progressing into the final to face Weighton Utd.

The final was another close match. Both teams had a few half chances, and a big collision on 6 minutes saw Weighton lose Tom shaunessey to injury. Neither team could break the deadlock, so the game went to penalties. Step up Nathan Mather, the Weighton keeper. 3 saves from 3 penalties saw Weighton take the honours, and so began the jubilant celebrations.

REVIEW - It went to the wire but Waterside held their nerve...

The opening game saw Champions elect Waterside take on Real Soldierdad, who had the opportunity to help out their mates Trogs. Waterside took and early league wan Dan Moore smashed home a sweet freekick and looked to have sealed the title when Dan tucked in a second before half time. However Soldierdad are never a team to give in and made a spirited fightback in their final appearance at Soccer Sixes. Mid way through the second half they had drawn level, and the smiled returned to the faces of the Weighton players. But the boys from Waterside we in no mood to relinquish the title they have had their grip on for the majority of the season, and with a couple of minutes to go the returning Brad Palin popped up to score the winner and seal the league win - WELL DONE WATERSIDE!!!

Weighton themselves had a tough game against the unpredictable Deportivo. Deportivo continued to play the long ball game, which isn't the best idea against big Martin Moss and the second meanest defence in the league, especially when they were relying on (9 stone dripping wet through) Andy Galloway to be the target man - Sox Gal, but they were not playing to your strengths...
The game tight throughout, until 2 mins from time when Phil Wright Stepped into his own box (and you did I was watching) to play the ball back to the keeper. The ref had no choice but to give a pen, which was smashed home by Moss for the win. Second place secured.

110 could only muster 5 players due to leave commitments back on camp but found themselves 2-0 up within 5 minutes. AJ's finally pulled themselves together and made the extra man advantage count, and a very entretaining game finally finshed honours even at 3-3. Ian Holland scored his fourth goal in 3 weeks and showed his class throughout. If AJ's do stay in the league, Holland would definately be a player to keep hold of, as their recent run of form since he joined proves.

BarceHullona's final game was against Reservoir Trogs, who were basically the same team as 110 due to lack of numbers. A couple of last minute extras made kick off time to boost the Trogs numbers, and seemed to do the trick as the boys raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Diego and Kev Neale, who is still in the hunt for top goal scorer. But BarceHullona showed the grit that has seen them remaining unbeaten in 2010, even with a heavily depleated team, and brought the score back to 2-2 with good finishes from Newsam and particularly Andy Martin.

Not Very Athletic turned up with designs ov overtaking opposition Angel and securing 9th place in the league. However it was Angel who came out the stronger of the two. Prior to the game I had warned NVA that Marcel Veli was the man to watch in the Nagel team and so it was proven, with Veli bagging a hat-trick. Another goal from the Rich Bell and a reply from Harley of NVA left the score at 4-1, with angel the ones who secured 9th place. NVA now have a final game v Reservoir Trogs next week - a good opportunity to work on their cup tactics!

The final game saw the battle to avaid bottom spot. Borussia teeth came into the match having only managed 1 point since taking over from Action force at the turn of the year. Black Sox had a spanking new kit and really looked the part, and confidence in the camp was sky high before kick off - this was surely going to be a cracker... Well, maybe not. The game had its share of chances, good (and bad) tackles and some good saves. In the end it was a single goal from Crease for Borussia which secured 11th place and dropped Black Sox to the bottom of the pile - I see a new (bitter) rivalry brewing.

One final push

This could be not only the biggest game in our history but also the biggest game in the history of the Beverley Soccer Sixes league!

Listen up team. As can be seen from the writeup below it is possible our rearranged game, against the mighty Trogs, could not only be our decider for overtaking Angel but also a decider for the league winners! It is a rearranged game so may well be played last, with literally some people watching to see the outcome of the league.

We have to show them what we can do, give them something to cheer:

Since the very beginning we've not even been classed as the underdogs, we've been the unnoticed making up the numbers for the glory of others. And we have looked on with jealousy.

Yet We have soldiered on; through the vitriol, through the pity and worst of all through the obscurity and we have worn the yellow.

We have fought against the odds, forever defending, and we have worn the yellow.

We have taken defeat, we have taken ridcule, and we have worn the yellow.

We have laughed with them, as they laugh at us, and we have worn the yellow.

We have taken the worst referees, week after week, because our games 'don't matter'and we have worn the yellow!

Well next week all this can change; 2 games to shape our future. 2 games to make our mark on this league. 2 games to turn this all around. Do what we need to do and we can, finally, stroll into the bright lights instead of skirting around them. Our shirts will reflect the light back at those scorners and unbelievers, blinding them with our reflected glory, shining brighter than the sun. Heads held high, we will proudly stroll on.

Real Soldierdad 0 v 0 Reservoir Trogs

Stadio Leconfield Campo was the venue for this re-arranged match between the Army's top two teams in the Soccer Sixes league. The pitch was perfect, the light rain provided a quick surface ideal for both teams who like to pass and the ref was there focused and ready, but unfortunately the game was pretty uneventful. Both teams had a couple of half chances, but neither team took the match in their grasp and the game eventually finished 0-0.

the results leaves both teams neading other to lose as well as having to win their own matches. Realistically Trogs have the best opportunity, but will require Waterside and Weighton to lose their final / final 2 matches respectively. Trogs have 2 games against AJ's and NVA remaining and are confident of winning both. Coupled with the strongest goal difference in the league, the Trogs dream is still alive!

With that being said, the league is really Watersides to give away. The boys only require a draw in their final game which, as fate would have it, is against Real Soldierdad!

This was a must win game and we won it! A goal stolen from the Russian leagues and perfected on our training ground from Mr Brinham (diagram below) secured us the win we required to, depending on the Angel result, pinch the much sought after fourth (from bottom) spot if we beat Angel next week. This would be quite an achievement for us and worthy of a pint down the pub afterwards if we pull it off, or a pint down the pub afterwards to commiserate if we don't.

Also worth noting two assists in two games for our keeper, W Collins. Remember the name, it'll be worth sticking him in your fantasy football team.

Finally, I think I speak for the whole team when I say that we hope Tom's significant other feels better soon, moving in with him must be heartbreaking indeed.

And so it comes down to the last week...

Top of the table Waterside took on BarceHullona in a must win game for both sides. Barce took an early lead with a route one goal through Dave 'Barlow' Barley, but were left hanging on just before the break when Danny Moore wriggled free from 2 players on to see his shot smash back off the post and out for a goal kick. Within 20 seconds of the re-start Dan found space on the edge of the Barce box and this time made no mistake, smashing home his 20th of the season. The game then turned to chaos when Stew Scott was given 2 mins in the sin bin for petulance. Minutes after Barce defender Chris Wilson picked up the ball inside his own area after mistaking the refs whistle on the next pitch for that off referee Uzzell. The ref had no choice but to award Waterside a penalty. with only a dozen seconds left on the clock to boot. Unfortunately the usually deadly Dan Moore smacked his pen against the keepers legs, and the clock counted down to an entertaining draw.

Not Very Athletic took the advantage in their match against Borrusia Teeth by a single goal, taking them within 3 points of 1 place above them Angel (who had to play later in the night). Borussia were without the services of big man angus after his cockled ankle last week and must now focus all of their attention on next weeks game against the Black Sox if they are to achieve their only victory of the season.

Real Soldierdad must have been bemussed when the turned up to see a full squad of 10 Black Sox players waiting for them. This was the biggest squad display of the season and was highly impressive (off the pitch anyhew!). Back on the pitch it was all one way traffic. Rose, Marston and Haylock 2 gave Soldierdad a 4-0 victory. Soldierdad have a early week clash against the Trogs before entartaining Waterside in what could be a championship decider.

Angel came away with a great point against ONE10 which should see them seal 9th place in the league (unless NVA can beat them and the Trogs in the final week). ONE10 had a load of the ball but couldn't find more than a single goal and are now well out of the picture at the top end.

AJ's v Depo saw the first red card of the season when Chris 'Weasel' Williamson was dismissed for foul and abusive language towards referee Jack Grieve. This however didn't cost the AJ's who managed to hold on to their single goal advantage to take three points. Deportivo continue to frustrate by not reaching their full potential. Their final game of the season is against Weighton who are still in the hunt for the championship. It will be interesting to see if the quality Depo turn up and take the points as they did against Waterside.

In the final game a rejuvenated Trogs took on Weighton in a game that has really shaped the table. Weighton needed to take advantage of Waterside's slip up earlier in the night, but a fine early goal from diego seemed to throw the boys, and the Trogs took full adavantage. It wasn't until the final few minutes that Weighton got into their groove, but by this time they were already 3-0 down. I personally put the loss down to the pitchside influence of Sammi 'voodoo man' Tarhuni who's mind control seemed to put WEIGHTON off their game. The fact that WEIGHTON scored within a minute of Sammi leaving only strengthens my theory!

Weighton are now 4 pts behind Waterside but with a game in hand. It is essential that they take two wins from the final 2 games to win the league, and they must also hope that Waterside drop points against Soldierdad. Next week should be really interesting!

Right guys. Massive game this week. Take the 3 points from this one and, assuming Angel lose to ONE10, our goal difference will be almost identical to Angel's with only a -3 difference in points. This leaves us with two games, 1 more than Angel. However, as one is a game in hand, we may have to play Angel and Trogs on the final day. If we play Angel first and beat them it'll all go down to how many goals we concede against the Trogs; Us knackered from the previous game against the leagues top scorers. What a (possible) finale!

As this is the most important game of your careers thus far I thought a speech was required. I must admit that a certain Mr Shakespeare may have helped with some of the words:

It's getting tight at the top!
Trogs v AJ's was a competitive affair with neither team giving an inch to the opposition. Both teams managed to bag a single goal, but the controversy in the match came on the 6 minutes mark, when referee Patrick Browich first awarded, then took away a goal for the Trogs. In fairness to the referee it was a really difficult one to judge. The Trogs striker smashed the ball against the bar, it then struck the back of the AJ's keeper who was stood with his heels on the line, before somehow rolling off the pitch and out for a corner. On first impressions it seemed the ball had squeezed through a gap in the net, but after a quick inspection of the goal it was clear a freaky bounce or spin had actually resulted in the correctly awarded corner.

Up and down Deportivo were back in the groove with a 1-0 victory over Angel. The game had some, and bad, moments, but it was Depo top scorer Firthy who proved to be the difference between the two sides. Depo have now got two games left to try and finish in the top half of the table.

Not Very Athletic game a great performance with only 5 men against a strong Soldierdad side. Although they were on the losing end of a 3-1 score line, the NVA boys wery rightly boyant after the match. To say that they can't quite match the physical prowess of the Soldierdad troops is something of an understatement, especially with 5 players, but the fact that NVA would probably have lost in double figures this time last season shows how far they have come.

Borussia Teeth came close to an upset against ONE10, but in the end it was not to be. The Teeth played some decent football and defended well against the free passing 110, and had a good chance to go ahead when they were awarded a penalty by referee Uzzell. Unfortunately the kick was very poor (I think it went out for a throw!), and the boys from 110 finally made a breakthrough to snatch the points with a few minutes remaining. Next up for Borussia are games against NVA and BLack Sox who sit in the two positions above them. With two games left against their nearest competitors, the boys from Borrusia must finally sense that first win is close.

Waterside consolidated their place at the top of the table with a 2-0 win over the Black Sox, and heaped the pressure back onto Weighton. Danny Moore got back in the goals with only his second goal since mid Feb. However it was the performance of the SOx which was the talking point after the game. The team came off claiming the moral victory, using their (imaginary) gentleman's agreement of a 3 goal head start to mean they had beaten the top of the league team.

The finally game of the night looked like it was always going to be close affairon paper, and so it proved on the pitch too. Weighton were keen to keep their title run on track, while BarceHullona were defending a 100% win streak taht dated back to last year. The game never really got going and in the end a draw seemed a fair result, although this was no real use to either team.

Waterside take top sport as Weighton enjoy a night off!

Waterside went back to the top of the table after a 3 v 0 victory over Not Very Athletic. Captain Phil Clarke showed his composure in front of goal with a tidy brace and defender Gary Wiles added a third to see the boys move clear by a point. NVA put up a good porformance and their growth as a team was clear for all to see.

New referee Patrick Bromwich was given a real test in his first match, thrown in at the deep end in a tough encounter between rivals Real Soldierdad v ONE10. This was always going to be tight, and in the end a 1-1 draw was probably the best result, although it did see ONE10 drop from 4th to 5th.

Deportivo v Borrusia Teeth was also a close fought affair. Some good defending and wasted chances kept the score close, with a single goal from the sprightly fisher proving the only difference between the sides. Borrusia are still waiting for their first win, and face another tough test against ONE10 next week. however, their final two games of the season see the Teeth take on the two teams directly above them, NVA & Black Sox.

Kev Neale was again amongst the goals as Trogs saw of angel with a comfortable 3 v 0 victory. The trogs have games against Soldierdad, AJ's, Weighton & BarceHullona to come, which could really shape the way the season pans out for several sides.

The final game saw BarceHullona face Black Sox. I say it every week, but BarceHullona really are in top form. They are 100% since the turn of the year and are moving up the table every week. Andy Martin and his new blue predators seemed to make all the difference in this fixture. Andy bagged a couple of goals and was involved all over the pitch. With that been said, questions have to be asked about the defending in this league. Dan Piwinski now has 3 goals this season and has only played about 8 games! After watching him play 30+ goals for reigning champions Shanghi and not get close (except for the one I disallowed!!!), to have scored in nearly 50% of his games this season suggest teams are getting slack at the back! - Soz Poo

The game between AJ's v Weighton had to be postponed due to imjuries and lack of numbers in the AJ's camp. My sources tell me Martin Moss had the Weighton boys doing laps around the village from 6pm - midnight to ensure they don't drop a beat when they return to action next week. And what a big game it is: Weighton v BarceHullona!

Weighton take the advantage at the top.

Weighton moved two points clear at the top of the table after a comfortable 3-0 victory over angel. the returning Shaun Bennett popped up with two goals to take him second in the top scorers chart. Weighton next face AJ's, which is never an easy game, while Angel have an encounter with the Trogs to look forward too.

Real Soldierdad solidified their spot in third place with a hard fought victory over Deportivo. Momnet of the match came with the last kick of the game, when self proclaimed football genius Mark Atkinson had the ball at his feet right on the edge of the opposition area and looked certain to slot past the stranded keeper. What happened next will surely be on every 'Footballs Worst Nightmares' dvd out this Christmas... with seemingly little to do but roll the ball in, Mark proceeded to not only miss, but smash the ball clean over the 30ft fence behind the goal and into the car park. To the best of my knowledge, the ball boy is still looking for it!

Form boys BarceHullona continued their impressive streak with a 2-0 win over AJ's. to give AJ's their credit they held out with only 5 men until the last few minutes, when Andy Martin twice took advantage as the extra man and slotted in two goals for the win. Barce are now in 5 place with the opportunity to move up to 3rd depending on what occurs in the Soldiredad v ONE10 fixture next week.

Borussia Teeth are still looking for their first win after a convincing thumping at the hand of Reservoir Trogs. Trogs main man Kev Neale hit four for the second time in three weeks, as the Trogs finally got their touch back after a terrible couple of months.

At the top end of the league, Waterside dropped another 2 points against ONE10. In a physical game ONE10 took the lead and looked to have held out until 2 minutes from time, when Dan Moore smashed a free kick under the defending wall and into the bottom corner to rescue a point. Waterside have a seemingly easier fixture next week against against Not Very Athletic, although the NVA b0ys have put in a couple of battling performance of late. ONE10 v a battle against camp foes Real Soldierdad, with the third place spot up for grabs as a result.

The final game saw the big one between NVA v Black Sox. The game was fairly tight, and black Sox had plenty of pressure without really creating too much, but in the end it was the finishing quality of the NVA boys that shone through. The big game for the Sox now is the final match of the season against Borrusia Teeth. With only 2 points seperating them, the game is huge for both sides.

Review:

The Black Sox continued their unfavourable form, shipping another 5 goals to ONE10. However, team skipper Andy 'Golden Gloves' Sanders was fairly boyed by the scorer, stating that "My back is feeling much better this week due to the much reduced need to bend down and pick the ball out of my net!". ONE10 get back track after a disappointing week last Weds, and looked to have regained the confidence that proved so strong in the early weeks of the year.

BarceHullona again picked up a 2-0 victory, with two impressive goals from Chris Newsome. His second was a thing of beauty, picking up the ball 20yds from goal, turning his marker with a cute megs and then stroking a sweet right footer past the keeper and into the bottom corner. NVA have another tough game next week against a revitalised ONE10. It will be interesting to see if their heads are fully on the game, as they have a bottom of the table clash against their old rivals Black sox the week after.

The clash between Trogs v Soldierdad was postponed after the 'dad pulled out on the grounds of having an inter-service 11's game in the afternoon. Trogs manager/captain Kev Neale was a little bitter, claiming the 'dad had lost their bottle and feared playing his side - not that I'm trying to stoke the already burning fire of rivalry!!!

The Angel picked up another good victory with a 1-0 win over AJ's. Once again their tried and tested method of goal scoring proved to be the difference, with Marcel Veli bagging his 4th of the season, and third since Xmas. AJ's had a claim for a penalty, but senior referee Jay Rowley had a good look at the incident, and match referee Matt Heard was bob on with his decision - well done Matt!

The final game of the evening saw Waterside take on Deportivo. The boys from Depo soaked up the early pressure and scored a nice counter attacking goal to go in 1-0 at half time. A few strong words between the Waterside boys only seemed to make matters worse, and this ultimately ended up being the worse performance the team have put in since the joined Soccer Sixes nearly a year ago. Passes went astray, shots flew wide from daft angles and the usually strong team cohesion was nowhere to be seen. To give Depo their credit, they battled hard and used the counter attack to great effect. Thier second goal was all about a quick break, fast passing and cool finishing. Some may say their tactics of 5 behind the ball were negative, but after watching a gazillion matches in this league, I will give them praise for changing their tactics to win the game.

Next week sees Waterside take on the Trogs, and they will need to be back on their game if they are to maintain the challenge for the title, with Weighton now sitting top of the pile.

After two frustrating weeks of postponed games due to a snow covered pitch, Soccer Sixes was finally up and running again this week.
It was business as usual for Waterside, who took on new boys Borussia Teeth in the opening fixtures. Waterside had plenty of posession and created several good chances but could not find the back of the net. Borussia had a few good spells and look to be a decent side who will get better the more the play. Eventually it was the league's top scorer, Danny Moore who found the break through. After picking the ball up deep he beat three a smash the ball home to keep Waterside top of the table.
Angel finally welcomed back a fit Rich Bell to the starting line up, but it was stalwart Darren 'Rage' who scored the only goal of the game, giving angel a much needed win against a battling Black Sox side.
AJ's also welcomed back players who had missed several games before Xmas, most notably Nick Rawnsley. The 24 minute game had been a tight, close fought affair and with the scores tied at 1-1 a draw looked enevitable, until Nick popped up to score with the final kick of the game and give AJ's a win which puts them back in the chase for a top 6 finsh.
It was a week of poor results for the Army boys, only Real Soldierdad managed to take anything from the games. Soldierdad managed to squeeze in a late goal against BarceHullona, who were agrieved several times by the refereeing of Mr. Uzzell. Soldierdad ultimately added to the bad mood by nicking a late, late goal to finish the match 2-2. - Barlow & Willow, neither of you is taking credit for the OG.
Second place Trogs went down 1-0 to the battling Deportivo, who continue to impress this season. Although Deportivo have shown some greta displays this season, this result was still something of a shock. However, investigation shows that Callum Eade and Mike Helyard have been putting in extra training, smashing weights all over Beverley Leisure complex in an attempt to catch the eye of the BodyPump coach in the tuesday evening class. It must have been their increased muscle mass which put the frighteners up the Trogs and allowed their leading scorer Locky, to crack home the only goal of the game.
The final game of the night saw Weighton make up ground on second and third place with a win over 110. Both teams had chances and played some good football, and the 'passion' was on display throught the match, with some tough tackles from both sides. The game was decided by Tom shaunessey, who netted his 6th of the season late in the first half to take all three point.
